On the way to Mtskheta-Mtianeti center, Ananuri, you have to pass Georgian Military Road, where you see Jinvali Water Reservoir, and from where water is distributed to Tbilisi. The reservoir was built about 30 years ago and it is 10 km high.
After passing Jinvali Water Reservoir, you will enter Ananuri village, where at the confluence of Aragvi River you will see Ananuri Architectural Complex, one of the best monuments of the late feudal period. It assembles national, military and cultural structures. Most of Ananuri monuments were built in XV C., they represent a grandiose castle. The oldest building of the castle is 20 m. long Guard Tower. The assemble also has a small church, Ananuri villagers call it “The Healer”. The most important architectural building is the temple with a large dome, it was built in 1689. In 2007 Ananuri Castle was put in UNESCO World heritage list.
From Ananuri you go to ski resort Gudauri. Those who like skiing, Gudauri is a great place. It is located in Kazbegi Region, on the south hill of Caucasus, 12km. from Tbilisi and 2196 m above sea level. At the end of XX C. an Austrian Company “Sopelmier” built a ropeway that caused further development of the resort. They have carrier cables that will take you up to 2000 m-3270 m. high. The total length of ski track is 16km. Skiing season in Gudauri lasts from December to April, but is has vacationers in summer too, especially families with little kids.
From Gudauri passing through Cross Pass (Jvris Ugeltexili) you will go to Kazbegi, the center of Khevi State, from where you can see (if it’s not covered with clouds) Mkinvartsveri, a mountain in Kazbegi, it is the highest mountain in Georgia, it is 5047 m. high. There is also a glorious Gergeti Holy Trinity church (2170 m. high) that overlooks Kazbegi in the background of Mkinvartsveri. The church was built in XIV C. during the reign of Giorgi V (1318-1346)
One of the ways from Gergeti leads us to Russian boarder (15 km. till the boarder) along the river Tergi in Dariali valley. Here Georgian King Tamar built a castle in XII C. which is still called King Tamar Castle. Nowadays, only ruins are remained.
With that said, skiing and hiking lovers, visit the region, have fun and enjoy its beautiful nature and fresh air.
