Tbilisi is the capital of Georgia and is political, economic, cultural and educational center of the country. It is connected to almost many corner of the world via ground transportation or air. The city is located on both sides of the river Mtkvari, 380-700 m. above sea level. In historical sources Tbilisi has been mentioned as urban territory from III-IV BC, and it is proved by the objects found during excavations. In V C. king Vakhtang Gorgasali announced Tbilisi as a capital of the country and began constructions, it was finished by his son Dachi at the beginning of VI C. Tbilisi is truly gorgeous city with its location, with districts layouts above the hills and the river Mtkvari, which divides Tbilisi into two parts and at the same time gives it a wonderful look.
You don’t need a helicopter to see the true features of Tbilisi; you can go up Mtatsminda that overlooks the city and enjoy the view, here the most distinguished monument of Mother of Qartli (QarTlis Deda) is placed. it is a statue of Georgian woman holding a bowl in her left hand, which means that we welcome our friends with a bowl of wine, and a sword in her right hand, which means that we greet our enemies with a sword.
In Tbilisi you have an opportunity to visit lots of points of interests, such as:
- Botanic Garden, located at the valley of river Tsavkistskali. It is 156 hectares large. Botanic Garden was built in 1625. Old Botanic Garden was considered as a part of Georgian Kings’ Palace. There are up to 5000 kind of plants.
- Tsavkistskali canyon located at the river Tsavkistskali and is 0-15m. deep.
- Sulfur bath, it is very famous in Tbilisi. In XIII C during King Tamar’s reign there was 65 sulfur bath and all free to use.
- Metekhi Church, located at left bank of the river Mtkvari. Metekhi Church was built by King Vakhtang Gorgasali in V C. In the courtyard of the temple there is monument of the King Vakhtang Gorgasali.
- Sioni Cathedral, built in VI C. The cathedral was destroyed many times by enemies but it was given its final look in XVII-XVIII CC.
- Mamadaviti Church, located at Mtatsminda was built in 1542. In the back yard of the church there is pantheon of public figures.
- Qashveti Church built in 1910, famous with beautiful ornaments and paintings.
Tbilisi is very hospitable city, which is why here you get to see Jewish Synagogue, Armenian, Russian, Catholic Churches and Mosque.
Newly built Holy Trinity Church (77m. from the ground up to the Cross on top of the Church; 97.5m. from the foundation up to the Cross on top of the Church) is eye-catching in Tbilisi, it gives the city a very attractive look which you can see from every part of the city. The Holy Trinity Church was built with the blessing of Patriarch Ilia II, on 3rd of March, 1996. Inside the Cross, built on dome, they put pieces of the holy Cross where Jesus, our Savior suffered, holy relics of St. Dodo and David Gareji and etc.
There are lots of entertainment and recreation places in Tbilisi as well, like: Turtle Lake, Mtatsminda, Tbilisi Sea where you will have all the conditions to relax and work out; You can take a trip by ship in the river Mtkvari; Shardeni street famous with its bars, restaurants and clubs; Children entertainments center “Bombora”, lots of aqua parks and many more.
